Misfire Doesn’t Mean You’re Done

Dear Friends,
If you’ve ever spent time on the range, you know that feeling when a round doesn’t fire. You line up the shot, take a breath, pull the trigger…and nothing. Just silence. For a second, your stomach drops. But you know the drill. You stay calm, clear the chamber, and get ready to fire again.
That moment says a lot about life.
Every man hits seasons where things don’t fire like they should. You put in the effort, you had the right aim, and it still fell flat. Maybe it was a plan that fell apart, a promise you didn’t keep, or a decision that left damage behind. The quiet that follows can mess with your head. It makes you question your aim. It makes you wonder if you should even step back up to the line.
But here’s what I want you to hear: you’re not finished.
In Guys, Guns and God, we talk about what happens in that silent space between failure and the next chance. That’s where character gets built. That’s where humility starts working. You learn more from clearing a jam than from a perfect shot. You start realizing that God isn’t counting how many times you miss…He’s looking at whether you’re willing to pick the gun back up.
“The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.
But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.”
Proverbs 24:16 (NLT)
That verse hits home. Falling isn’t the failure…staying down is. God’s people stumble, but they get up. They clear the chamber. They steady their hands. They take the next shot with a little more wisdom than before.
There’s a line in the book that still speaks to me: “You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be honest.” Honesty is where rebuilding starts. It helps you reset your focus. It helps you line your sights back up with what matters. When you tell the truth about what went wrong, you stop aiming blind.
Another part says, “A man doesn’t become less useful to God because of failure. He becomes more dangerous to the enemy if he learns from it.” That means your mistakes aren’t wasted. They train you. They sharpen your awareness. They make you steady. You’re not fragile…you’re forged. You just need to stay teachable.
If you’ve been living like your best shot already happened, I want you to step back up. Clear the chamber. Load the next round. The range isn’t closed, and God hasn’t benched you. You still have breath, focus, and purpose. You’re still called to lead.
Hope isn’t pretending you didn’t miss. It’s standing right where you are when you did; taking a breath and getting ready to try again. You’re not out. You’re not done. And the target in front of you still matters.
The last shot doesn’t define you.
The next one will.
Stay encouraged…your story is still unfolding.
