Gift of Focus
When life distracts you, how do you fight to stay dialed in?

Dear Friends,
I once heard a range instructor say, “You can’t hit what you don’t focus on.” Sounds simple—until you’re trying to hold your aim steady with sweat running down your back and noise all around you. Distractions are everywhere. And when you’re distracted, your shot wanders. Every time.
That truth doesn’t just apply to targets. It hits home in every part of life. Distraction can be subtle. Sometimes it’s a screen. Sometimes it’s a lie you keep believing. Sometimes it’s a hundred small responsibilities that blur your vision until you don’t even recognize your own priorities anymore. Focus isn’t automatic. It’s a fight.
Proverbs 5:1–2 (NLT) gives a blunt call to attention:
“My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel. Then you will show discernment, and your lips will express what you’ve learned.”
This isn’t just advice—it’s a plea. Solomon isn’t whispering this; he’s practically grabbing us by the collar saying, “Listen. Lock in. Don’t wander.” And the rest of Proverbs 5 shows why distraction leads to destruction. What starts as a glance or a delay or a “just this once” can spiral into decisions that damage our future and our families.
Wisdom requires attention. Not once, but over and over.
The Core Message
Guy, Guns and God pulls no punches. It shows what happens when men drift—when good intentions aren’t backed by consistent choices. We’re not just physical beings; we’re spiritual warriors. And warriors don’t stay sharp by accident.
This is about alertness. It challenges us to see the traps we’ve been ignoring. The late nights. The wandering eyes. The unspoken bitterness. The passive habits. It’s all connected.
One of the strongest points in the book is this: What you focus on expands. If you feed temptation, it grows. If you feed wisdom, it strengthens. You don’t have to be perfect—but you do have to be present. Alert. Honest. Focused.
This also goes deeper than resisting sin. It’s about guarding your energy, your thoughts, your values. Are you giving your best attention to things that actually build you? Or are you squandering it on things that only steal from you?
God’s wisdom isn’t just a set of rules—it’s a rescue plan. He’s not trying to control you. He’s trying to protect you. And the more you listen, the clearer His voice becomes.
Encouraging Takeaway
If you’ve been distracted lately, don’t stay stuck in shame. Start where you are. Ask God to help you refocus. You’re not disqualified because you lost sight for a while. You’re still in this fight. And focus can return faster than you think—when you choose to pay attention to the right things.
You don’t need to fix everything today. Just refocus. One choice at a time. One honest step at a time.
Stay encouraged—your story is still unfolding.
