Faith and Firearms: A Balanced Approach

Hello Friends!

This month’s message is how responsible gun ownership intertwines with faith. Both of these aspects do coexist and can enrich our lives and beliefs.

First of all, my point is that enjoying owning and shooting a gun is not inherently evil, no matter what popular media says today. Gun owners know firearms are necessary for personal defense and as a tool for sport and hunting. Gun ownership is a very personal choice. My aim is not to get everyone to go out and buy a gun but to encourage those who do, to do so responsibly.

Those who want to explore the excitement of shooting sports or simply seek self-protection should find reliable and reputable sources for guns, ammunition, and supplies. Also, if you want to own a firearm, you should start with a certified instructor.

Even if you never want to actually own a gun, there are specific considerations that everyone should be aware of. Nobody should be afraid of firearms, but in the presence of one, everyone should be very cautious. I want you to build awareness of what to look for and how to handle a gun safely. Gun safety is paramount for anyone with a firearm.

The Guys, Guns & God guide will provide you with the necessary information to link gun ownership with the ability to think for yourself and react accordingly in away that you may have not been taught.

Spiritual Insights

Let’s delve into the Proverbs that reflect on the unique balance of the discipline of shooting sports and your spiritual growth.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

-Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

Meaning: We are to trust God with all our hearts and not depend on what we understand. At all times, include God in everything you do, and this way, you give Him a chance to keep you on target because none of us know what lies ahead. But He does and wants the best for us.

Real Stories, Real Lessons

During my book development, Proverbs 3:5-6 caught my attention as a profound message. I have incorporated these verses into the chapter “Hard Work and Right Living Transforms Lives” to be an application to reinforce the breadth and scope of the purpose of the Guys, Guns & God’s program. I believe this proverb tells the story and encourages readers to memorize it.

While developing your new perspective on life, you need to continually practice hard work and live the right way. This step is critical for improving your skills and building your confidence, competence, and integrity, which are essential for living successfully.

In pistol shooting, there is a training tool that may be called “Pistol Correction Chart,” “Common Error Chart,” or “Pistol Group Analysis.” While some believe these tools are superficial and shallow in benefits, I have found them helpful and see them frequently posted at pistol ranges. Within Guys Guns & God, I have created the same type of diagram to be used as a practical study tool. I’ve adapted it to reflect the message of the book of Proverbs and place God at the center of everything we do and think.

I call it the “Personal Correction Chart.” The idea is that the outermost circle represents our world, And the center bullseye is where our focus should always be… on God, which I call “God-centered focus.” The surrounding segments are problem areas that may need attention and correction in our lives. These problem segments can represent “strongholds” in our lives, which are sins we commit that separate us from God. They manifest from the unhealthy desires we feel and imagine.

We constantly choose between life and death, light and darkness, truth and lies, and freedom or bondage. At times, we may allow, consciously or unconsciously, bad things to happen, such as sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, hatred, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissension, envy, drunkenness, and the like. The inner ring around the bull’s eye of a “God-centered focus” can be a barrier if you allow it. It is truly a reflection of what is going on inside our hearts.
