Strengthen Your Family Bonds
Hello Friends!
This month’s message is discovering how shooting sports as a family can foster deeper connections with each other and teach valuable life lessons, all within the context of gun safety and responsibility. Families are a part of God’s divine plan. They are where we can feel love and return love to others.
If you explore and pursue it, you can strengthen your bonds with your family members. In Guys, Guns, and God, there is a thirty-one-day challenge of daily reading from the Book of Proverbs while learning about firearm use and safety. Combining personal spiritual growth gained from the Book of Proverbs with respectfully and cautiously handling firearms, you will learn to embrace, celebrate, and cherish the family ties you were given by God.
While reading from the Book of Proverbs each day, search for what stands out to you and note the messages you want to remember and embrace in your life. Highlighting or making notes of information you would like to refer to in the future will enhance your learning and deepen your understanding. The Guys, Guns, and God guide will lead your steps and shots, and you will have a long and good life with the ultimate peace of mind of placing God at the center of everything you do and think.
Spiritual Bonds
Reflect on the importance of faith in nurturing a family’s unity. The Book of Proverbs has many spiritual teachings that can help guide family interactions and shared activities. Perhaps none is more important than how you raise your children.
“Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.”
-Proverbs 22:6 (NLT)
Meaning: This proverb provides valuable advice for parents. When a child is raised with the correct values and perspective, those lessons learned will have a lasting impact throughout their lives. The literal wording of Proverbs 22:6 (NLT) suggests that a well-trained child will always follow the right path. However, despite any godly direction from parents, all children will test the waters with their own thoughts, actions, reactions, and sins. This passage is not about simply raising obedient kids; it really means helping your children to recognize and develop their talents and gifts and, ultimately, the path that God has chosen for them.
Real Stories, Real Lessons
I did not have much exposure to guns when I was growing up. I’m not a hunter. My Dad was in the United States Army during World War II for four years. He and his Army company fought in the ninth wave of the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France. However, my dad never talked about his experiences in combat. He hated guns and did not allow me to have any real guns in the house.
When I turned twenty-one years old, I was of legal age to purchase a firearm. My first purchase was a Ruger Mark IV 22-caliber target pistol. I have no idea why I bought that pistol other than it looked cool and, at the time, was reasonably inexpensive, as was the ammunition to shoot. I never received any instructions on usage, maintenance, or safety. I bought the gun and kept it in a storage trunk with no lock in the living room of my college apartment with the gun covered in sweaters and blankets so no one would find it.
My roommate and I would occasionally go out behind campus property, somewhere in the woods, and shoot things with this 22-caliber pistol. I had no clue how unsafe and dangerous it was, not only to us but also to anyone in the area.
We used to shoot at an old, abandoned water tanker and assumed it was a water tanker. We found it cool and exciting to hit it and hear the clanging sound it made. However, we never considered the potential consequences of missing the tanker or if it contained hazardous materials. We did not think about what might happen if the tanker were punctured, which was very irresponsible and ignorant of gun safety.
Looking back, I am embarrassed by how careless I was. As the gun owner, I was responsible for handling it with care and caution. I knew that guns were not toys and required special attention, but I neglected to follow simple safety measures. I never cleaned or field-stripped the gun because I didn’t know better. I have learned my lesson and now take gun safety very seriously.
Guys, Guns, and God aims to give direction to help you, your friends, and your family to experience the thrill and excitement of shooting guns. As a guy, I have always been attracted to guns, and maybe you have, too. Take a shot, and you may find a new sport that your whole family can enjoy.
